PRIN 2026 Hybrid is a dedicated interdisciplinary track within Italy's national PRIN competition, launched for the first time in 2026 by the Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca. The program funds research projects that achieve genuine "hybridization" between Social Sciences and Humanities (SH) and at least one additional ERC macrosector. Five thematic lines define the eligible scope: quantum technologies, High Performance Computing, Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, and innovative technologies and pathways in healthcare. Total program budget is €56,640,000 — a distinct allocation separate from the standard PRIN 2026 €260 million envelope.

Each project receives between €1.2 million and €1.7 million over three years, slightly higher than the standard PRIN track to reflect the complexity of interdisciplinary work. Consortia must consist of 4 to 6 research units from different Italian universities or public research bodies, and every project must explicitly include the SH macrosector alongside at least one other macrosector. Fifteen percent of the budget is reserved for Principal Investigators under age 40. Applications are submitted in Italian via prin.mur.gov.it.

The call opened at 15:00 on 20 April 2026 and closes at 15:00 on 4 June 2026. Selection follows a three-phase evaluation process: (1) preliminary technical-scientific assessment, (2) full project technical-scientific evaluation, and (3) financial congruity review. Successful applicants will need to demonstrate true disciplinary hybridization — not merely a token SH work package — and align the research question with one of the five named thematic lines. Given that this is the first-ever PRIN Hybrid edition, there are no prior award statistics to benchmark against.

Five thematic lines: quantum technologies, HPC, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, innovative healthcare technologies. Must include SH macrosector.
