CLIMIT Carbon Removal (CDR) Call

CLIMIT CDR Call

Funds carbon dioxide removal in Norway with industrial partners for biological capture, biochar, direct air capture, and mineralization.

OpenGassnova (Norwegian state company for CCS)NorwayDeep-tech · core fit

The CLIMIT CDR Call is the first dedicated carbon dioxide removal (CDR) allocation within the CLIMIT programme, announced by Gassnova and the Research Council of Norway with a total pool of NOK 10 million. Unlike the main CLIMIT-Demo stream, which focuses on geological storage of industrially captured CO2, this call specifically targets removal pathways where the carbon was never a combustion emission in the first place. Five technology areas are in scope: BioCCS (capture and geological storage of biologically derived CO2), biochar for industrial or agricultural use with long-term soil storage, direct air capture combined with geological storage (DAC+CCS), enhanced mineralization through CO2 injection into bedrock, and methodology development for life-cycle analysis (LCA), techno-economic analysis (TEA), and measurement-reporting-verification (MRV) aligned with EU carbon removal regulations.

The call opened on a rolling basis in 2025, accepting applications through the standard CLIMIT process via postmottak@gassnova.no. Industrial projects with active industry collaboration are required; purely academic proposals without an industry partner are outside the call's stated eligibility criteria. International and Nordic collaborations are explicitly encouraged, meaning non-Norwegian organisations may participate as consortium members. The NOK 10 million pool is the entire budget envelope for this CDR-specific allocation, which is smaller than the main CLIMIT-Demo annual budget of approximately NOK 80 million; the call may close once the pool is committed.

This call represents CLIMIT's first structural step toward funding carbon removal as a category distinct from conventional CCS, making it strategically significant for teams working at the intersection of land use, direct air capture, or enhanced weathering alongside geological storage. Applicants should contact the CLIMIT Secretariat before submitting to confirm the call is still accepting applications and to receive current application guidance.

BioCCS (biological CO2 + geological storage); biochar for industrial/agricultural use with long-term soil storage; DAC+CCS; enhanced mineralization (CO2 injection into bedrock); LCA/TEA/MRV methodology development aligned with EU carbon removal regulations.
