Hurricanes Ian and Fiona caused tens of billions of dollars in damage in a single season, and a lot of that came down to how the coastline itself responded β€” whether a barrier island held or breached, for instance. This notice funds better predicting that response before the next storm.

The core idea is that sediment is not uniform along a coastline β€” porosity, grain size and how easily it erodes…

Building a coupled ocean-wave-sediment model that predicts how coastal geomorphology changes during extreme storms, based on how sediment porosity, grain size and erosion resistance vary along the coast. Aimed at improving storm and emergency preparedness for coastal infrastructure and protection systems, funded through Hurricane Ian disaster-supplemental money.
