Funds translational cancer centres built around one organ system, or one biological mechanism that drives cancer across several. A clinical trial is required.
A SPORE is the National Cancer Institute's translational cancer research centre, and the defining feature is focus. Each one is built around a specific organ-site cancer, or a group of closely related cancers, and has to move research toward better prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of them — not toward answering a single investigator's question in isolation.

Investigator-initiated translational research organised as a centre around one organ-site cancer or a group of highly related cancers — related by organ system, by a shared infectious cause, or by dysregulation of a common signalling pathway — aimed at improved prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment.
