The SFOE Pilot and Demonstration Programme is the Swiss Federal Office of Energy route for projects that bridge energy research and market use. It supports pilot and demonstration facilities, projects, analysis, and field tests under the Energy Act when they contribute to efficient energy use or renewable energy and create public findings for the energy system.

The programme is currently closed to new financial contributions: the public SFOE page says no new P+D financial contributions will be granted until further notice after federal austerity decisions. The directive still describes the funding mechanics. P+D grants are restricted to 50% of eligible project costs, or 70% in exceptional cases, based on non-amortisable costs directly tied to developing and testing the innovative parts of the project. No universal CHF award cap is published, so amount fields are left blank.

Private-sector companies can apply directly, alongside public companies, trade and industry associations, universities, research institutes, NGOs, public bodies, and joint undertakings. P+D projects are closer to market than research projects and require credible development, testing, and later implementation potential. SFOE checks solvency for non-public partners, especially when the requested contribution exceeds CHF 500,000.

When the route is accepting projects, applications can use either a bottom-up open procedure or an SFOE top-down call. Applicants should use the SFOE directive and forms, define a project lead, submit project and finance documents, and expect SFOE to evaluate formal criteria, energy benefit, innovation, application potential, market implementation, and probability of success.

The practical caveat is timing. This is a real company-winnable grant route and should stay in the catalog, but founders cannot rely on it for a current application until SFOE reopens P+D financial contributions or publishes a successor call. For now, teams should monitor SFOE and consider the energy research route, Innosuisse, or other Swiss innovation programmes if they need active funding.

Pilot projects, demonstration projects, field tests, analysis, preliminary studies, planning, and impact assessments for innovative energy technologies, renewable energy, energy efficiency, storage technology, grids, and related socio-economic or business-model approaches.
