SPRIND's R&D grant instrument is a direct, bespoke funding mechanism administered by the Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen (SPRIND), the German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation, headquartered in Leipzig. Unlike competitive challenges with fixed deadlines, R&D grants operate on a rolling intake — applicants submit at any time by email to projects@sprind.org or through the online form at sprind.org. The instrument funds breakthrough research across SPRIND's sector portfolio: AI, life sciences, energy, advanced materials, manufacturing, mobility, quantum computing, space, aviation, and security.

Award sizes range from single-digit millions up to a ceiling of €35 million per project. Crucially, repayment is triggered only if the funded project reaches commercial success — if the project does not commercialize, no repayment is required. This makes the instrument a success-conditional recoverable advance rather than a conventional non-repayable grant. SPRIND designs a tailored cooperation agreement for each funded project and explicitly does not operate with standard guidelines. The primary geographic focus is Germany and EFTA states, though the organization's FAQ confirms case-by-case flexibility for exceptional proposals from outside this region.

After submission, SPRIND sends an initial confirmation email, registers the application, and completes assessment in approximately 12 weeks. Acceptance rate across all SPRIND instruments is below 10%. The process is non-prescriptive: applicants can attach pitch decks, patents, or supporting documents alongside narrative responses to structured guiding questions. SPRIND positions itself as a partner rather than a funder — it enters a cooperation relationship and does not simply write a check, so applicants should anticipate an active working relationship rather than a grant and hand-off.

Breakthrough R&D across SPRIND sectors: AI, life sciences, energy, materials, mobility, quantum, space, security. No topic restrictions — project must target disruptive potential.
