Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking

Affordable, Safe and Sustainable aboveground medium to large GH2 storage

Funds research into affordable, safe materials and designs for medium-to-large aboveground compressed hydrogen storage.

This is a Research and Innovation Action run by the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking rather than the Commission directly, evaluated in a single-stage submission round. The JU has set a maximum contribution of EUR 4,000,000 for this topic and expects to fund one project, paid as a fixed lump sum under Horizon Europe's simplified-costs rules — the same lump-sum approach used across every topic in th

Proposals must develop and validate low-cost, hydrogen-compatible materials and tank designs for modular or containerised aboveground compressed-hydrogen storage sized 5 to 20 tonnes, aimed at hydrogen refuelling stations, industrial clusters and Hydrogen Valleys where underground storage isn't viable. Target performance includes at least a 30% increase in fatigue life (to 6,500 or more pressure cycles at 700 bar), at least 70% recyclability, at least a 25% cut in embodied CO2, and a storage cost of EUR 450 or less per kilogram of hydrogen stored, validated across a temperature range of -40°C to +60°C. Work must build and test a physical proof of concept assessing cyclic hydrogen pressurisation on the tank's liner, shell, insulation and supports, alongside safety provisions against tank rupture, jet flames and pressure-peaking in enclosed spaces, and must publish the resulting mechanical performance data under FAIR principles.
