Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking

Cost-efficient and reliable designs towards gigawatt-scale electrolytic hydrogen production plants

Funds research into cost-efficient, reliable plant designs for building gigawatt-scale electrolytic hydrogen production.

ClosedClean Hydrogen Joint UndertakingEU

This call funds a single Research and Innovation Action, run under Horizon Europe's standard rules and paid as a lump sum rather than reimbursed against actual costs, with an EU contribution capped at EUR 2.5 million. It pays for engineering-level design and analysis work, not for building a physical plant or developing new electrolysis cell chemistry, and it explicitly excludes hydrogen-pipeline …

This call funds research into cost-efficient and reliable designs for gigawatt-scale electrolytic hydrogen production plants, tackling the cost overruns, fragmented system integration and limited scalability that have stalled large hydrogen projects. Proposals should target reducing capital cost and improving the Balance-of-Plant design so large-scale plants (above 400 MW) can be built without simply repeating small-scale electrolyser designs.
