This call funds research into cost-efficient, small-scale hydrogen liquefaction (under 5 tonnes per day) for remote transport hubs, off-grid communities and smaller industrial facilities that cannot rely on large centralised liquefaction plants. Proposals should cut the capital and operating costs of small-scale liquefaction while optimising energy use and handling fluctuating demand. The technology must be benchmarked against today's commercial Helium Brayton and Claude cycle systems at both 1 and 5 tonnes-per-day scale, targeting a liquefaction cost around EUR 3.5 per kilogram for the 1 tonne-per-day unit. Proposals should also build a system-oriented Digital Twin of the new thermal concept to support the design phase and assess scalability up to 5 tonnes per day.
