Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking (IHI JU)

Decode the Immunoscience of age-related diseases

Funds a research consortium that studies why immune-mediated diseases behave differently when they first strike older adults and hunts for biomarkers to predict them.

This is a two-stage Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action: a short first-stage proposal, capped at 20 pages, is judged before a shortlisted team is invited to submit a full 50-page second-stage proposal. As with other Innovative Health Initiative topics, industry partners must cover 45% of the project's costs, on top of the EU's own contribution, and the second-stage proposal needs a strat…

The Innovative Health Initiative wants research that explains why immune-mediated diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, respiratory disease and rheumatoid conditions behave differently when they first appear in elderly patients rather than younger adults. It is looking for work that pins down the biological drivers of this age-related immune decline and turns them into biomarkers that can predict disease onset, flare-ups and treatment response. Proposals must cover several of these disease groups together so findings can be compared across organ systems rather than studied one disease at a time.
