This call funds innovation-stage development of communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) technology for drones and low-altitude aircraft, including using public LTE/4G/5G cellular networks for traffic awareness and low-cost mmWave-radar or 5G-based surveillance at vertiports and regional airports. It also wants 5G-based navigation and surveillance solutions for drones in urban areas, U-space GNSS augmentation, and electronic-conspicuity solutions so U-space services can extend to commercial aircraft, general aviation and crewed vertical-takeoff vehicles beyond dedicated U-space airspace. Several elements are explicitly dual-use civil-military technology.
