SOFWERX, operating under DEFENSEWERX on behalf of US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), hosted an Assessment Event sponsored by Program Executive Office Special Operations Forces Support Activity (PEO SOFSA) seeking mobile hydrogen production and storage systems capable of delivering 500 kilowatts of power output with air, land, and sea portability. The technical requirement specifies a containerized system supporting Special Operations Forces logistics deployments of 13 to 15 days in austere environments. PEO SOFSA manages acquisition and sustainment for SOF-unique equipment, and this event addressed a capability gap in energy-independent forward logistics support for special operations missions.
The process ran in multiple phases: respondents submitted capability documentation by May 4, 2026, followed by a downselection phase from May 5 to 12, 2026. Invited participants attended an in-person Assessment Event at SOFWERX in Tampa, Florida on June 9 and 10, 2026. The program is open to US Persons only, including industry, academic institutions, and national laboratories; non-US entities are excluded. No published award size or contract ceiling was stated; contract instruments available to SOFWERX include Other Transaction Authorities (OTA), Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA), prize competitions, and FAR-based contracts.
The capability documentation deadline of May 4, 2026 has passed; new submissions are no longer accepted for this event cycle. Organizations with active hydrogen energy solutions meeting the portability and power output specifications should monitor the SOFWERX opportunity pipeline for follow-on solicitations. Contact for this event was Sarah Marks at sarah.marks@sofwerx.org.
