SOFWERX, the innovation arm of DEFENSEWERX operating in support of USSOCOM, hosted a multi-phase Collaboration and Assessment Event sponsored by Program Executive Office SOF Warrior (PEO-SW) to identify low-cost disposable micro-sensor solutions for Special Operations Forces situational awareness. The required sensor capabilities include seismic detection, toxic substance detection, and signal detection, combined with extended autonomous power operation and the potential for wireless mesh networking to enable distributed persistent sensing in contested environments. PEO-SW is responsible for equipping SOF operators with individual and small-unit systems, and distributed micro-sensor networks directly address intelligence and force-protection requirements at the operational edge.

The event structure spans four phases: Phase 1 Collaboration Event on June 24, 2026 (CE registration deadline May 28, 2026); Phase 2 technical submissions open July 27 through August 28, 2026; and the Phase 4 in-person Assessment Event on October 13 through 15, 2026. The program is restricted to US Persons only — non-US entities are excluded. Open to industry, universities, and research organizations. No award size or contract ceiling is published; SOFWERX can execute OTA, CRADA, prize, or FAR-based contracts. Technical submission details and evaluation criteria will be released when Phase 2 opens on July 27, 2026.

The CE registration deadline of May 28, 2026 has passed; prospective participants should check the SOFWERX event page for late registration availability before the June 24 Collaboration Event. Phase 2 technical submissions represent the primary entry point for teams that missed CE registration. Contact is Olivia Larounis at olivia.larounis@sofwerx.org.

Low-cost disposable micro-sensors with seismic, toxic, and signal detection capabilities, extended power autonomy, and wireless mesh networking potential for SOF situational awareness.
