H2 Pioneros

Supports pioneering renewable hydrogen initiatives in hard-to-decarbonise industrial and heavy mobility projects across Spain.

H2 Pioneros is an IDAE-administered grant program providing €150 million to support pioneer projects that demonstrate the commercial viability of renewable hydrogen in hard-to-decarbonize industrial and heavy transport applications in Spain. The program targets production and use cases where electrification alone cannot achieve the necessary decarbonization — including heavy industry processes, long-distance freight, and industrial heat — and where early commercial-scale demonstrations are needed to prove economic and technical feasibility at scale. Projects are expected to be at advanced technology readiness levels, operating closer to market deployment than to laboratory research.

H2 Pioneros sits within Spain's comprehensive green hydrogen commitment of €2.721 billion, which also encompasses H2 Cadena de Valor (supply chain development), H2 Valles (hydrogen valley ecosystems), and Spanish participation in the Important Project of Common European Interest — Hy2 (IPCEI Hy2). Eligible applicants include for-profit companies, nonprofits, universities, and research organizations operating in Spain; projects must address renewable hydrogen production or deployment in qualifying hard-to-decarbonize sectors.
