Postdoctoral Research Grants — 4th Selection
Offers postdoctoral researchers in Latvia direct support for early-career scientific training and independent research progression.
The Postdoctoral Research Grants programme is a fellowship scheme for early-career researchers administered directly by the Latvian Council of Science (LZP) under EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027, activity 1.1.1.9. The total programme envelope is EUR 50,890,000, with funding structured as 85% from ERDF (EUR 43,256,500), 11.33% from the Latvian state budget (EUR 5,765,270), and 3.67% from private co-financing (EUR 1,868,230). The implementation period runs from 17 June 2024 through 31 December 2029, and all funded projects must be completed by that end date. Per-project funding is capped at EUR 192,360.
The 4th selection round under activity 1.1.1.9 was announced in February 2026. Applications are submitted by host institutions — Latvian scientific institutions or enterprises that employ the postdoctoral researcher — rather than by individual researchers directly. Both academic institutions and for-profit enterprises registered in Latvia can serve as host organizations. The programme's stated objectives are to develop skills of new scientists and increase research and innovation capacity at Latvian institutions and businesses. The previous 2014–2020 PostDoc programme was administered by VIAA and is now closed; only the 2021–2027 version administered by LZP is active.
Host organizations wishing to apply in the 4th round should verify current call details and submission requirements via sciencelatvia.lv, as specific per-round eligibility criteria are set out in formal call documents. The co-financing structure requires private-sector hosts to contribute 3.67% of total project costs. Research institutions operating across any scientific field are eligible, making this a cross-disciplinary programme. Applicants should confirm submission portal requirements and evaluation criteria directly with LZP before preparing a full application package.
All scientific fields. Focus on developing skills of new scientists and increasing research capacity at Latvian scientific institutions and enterprises.
