Schizophrenia and related disorders during mid- to late-life (R01)
Funds work on how schizophrenia emerges and changes after 35 — the age group where most patients are and least research has gone.
Most people living with schizophrenia are over 35 — some diagnosed decades ago and ageing with the illness, some diagnosed late. Almost all the research attention has gone to first-episode psychosis in young adults, and the result is that the mechanisms driving the illness in mid and late life are, in NIH's own words, poorly understood.
This notice funds translational work on that gap — two conne…
Translational research into how schizophrenia and related disorders emerge and change during mid to late life, in both people diagnosed young and ageing with the illness and people first diagnosed later, and into the targets that work suggests for future prevention and treatment.
