Mitacs Business Strategy Internship
Funds business strategy internships linking students and enterprises for applied execution outcomes.
The Mitacs Business Strategy Internship (BSI) funds interns — students, postdoctoral fellows, or recent graduates — to work with Canadian organisations on business strategy challenges, including market analysis, business model development, financial modelling, and commercialisation planning. The program operates on a rolling, continuous submission basis through the Mitacs RAP portal, with no fixed application deadlines; projects must start at least six weeks after submission, and review takes approximately four to seven weeks.
Under the standard model, the total award is CAD $10,000 per intern, fully allocated to the intern's stipend. The partner organisation contributes CAD $5,000 (plus applicable taxes). Under the enhanced model, the total award rises to CAD $15,000, of which up to CAD $5,000 may support eligible project costs or stipend top-ups, with a minimum intern stipend of CAD $10,000; the partner contributes a minimum of CAD $7,500. Internship units run four months as standard, adjustable to six months, and projects are limited to two years total.
Eligibility for the intern follows the same Mitacs criteria as other programs: Canadian citizens, permanent residents, international students with a valid study permit, or postdoctoral researchers with a work permit, all aged 18 or older. Interns must be registered students or postdocs at Mitacs partner institutions, recent graduates (within two years of graduation), or visiting researchers. Postdoctoral interns must have completed their PhD within five years of the project start date and are capped at nine four-month internship units. The BSI is specifically designed for strategy and business-facing research projects rather than laboratory or applied technical research.
Funds business strategy internship projects pairing Canadian university students with industry or non-profit partners, covering intern stipends and eligible project costs of $10,000–$15,000 per intern on a rolling basis.
