This call funds research into new thermal insulation concepts for bulk liquid hydrogen (LH2) shipping, such as multi-layer or variable-density multilayer insulation combined with spray-on foam, aerogels or nano-cellular foams. Proposals should improve on traditional vacuum-jacketed dewar tanks, whose insulation performance depends heavily on vacuum integrity and which are costly to manufacture at scale.
