Increased automation assistance for the pilot for ATM tasks

Funds research on single-pilot operations and cockpit automation that assists pilots with air traffic management tasks.

ClosedSESAR 3 Joint UndertakingEU

Evaluation weighs three criteria on top of the general Horizon Europe award criteria: Excellence and Impact each count for 40%, and Implementation counts for 20%. Beyond ranking proposals purely on score, the funder also guarantees a place for the highest-ranked proposal within each work area of the call, provided it clears the threshold, so a strong proposal in a less-crowded work area isn't simp…

This call funds research into single-pilot operations, covering the air/ground procedures, avionics and safety mitigations needed when only one pilot is on board during all flight phases, including take-off and landing. It also wants research on cockpit automation that assists the pilot with air traffic management tasks, such as improved flight-deck interfaces, CPDLC procedures and voice-less communication technology, and, where AI-based tools are used, how crosschecks between pilot and AI should work. Proposals may target mainline, commuter or business aircraft, and cover use cases from ground operations at complex airports to low-visibility landings.
