Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking

Sustainable hydrogen production from renewable gases and biogenic waste sources through innovative modular reactor design, process intensification and integration

Funds research into modular reactors that turn renewable gases and biogenic waste into sustainable hydrogen at higher efficiency.

ClosedClean Hydrogen Joint UndertakingEU

The Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking funds this as a single-stage Research and Innovation Action, costed as a lump sum under the Commission's July 2021 lump-sum contributions decision, with a EUR 3,000,000 contribution expected to fund exactly one project. Activities are expected to start at TRL 3 and reach TRL 5 by the project's end. Proposals must go beyond four named prior JU-funded projects --…

This call funds research into innovative modular reactor design, process intensification and integration for producing hydrogen from renewable gases and biogenic waste sources, using routes such as pyrolysis, gasification, steam reforming or dark fermentation. Proposals should push past the roughly 40% efficiency achieved by earlier EU-funded projects and characterise the carbon-based by-products for further valorisation. The call sets specific numeric technical targets depending on the pathway, including hydrogen recovery above 95%, at least an 80% cut in direct CO2 emissions from the feedstock, and a 48% hydrogen production efficiency target for the thermolysis route.
